HELPFUL TIPS:
We plan to pick a topic each month and give some helpful tips to keep you and your loved ones safe. If you have a topic you would like to know about feel free to let us know. This month we are focusing on scams; this generally involves the elderly but anyone can be a target.
-Some of the most common scams are Medicare fraud, funeral cons, bogus charities, internet fraud, sweepstakes, phone scams, investment schemes, and the “grandparent scam”.
-If it sounds to good to be true then it probably is. Follow your intuition.
-Remember no legitimate business takes gift cards as a form of payment.
-Verify the information first. If Medicare, the bank, IRS, or another business calls saying you owe money or is promoting some type of offer, hang up and verify. Call your bank or find the 1 800 number for the IRS etc. If it’s in person, then shut the door and call 911 if you find it suspicious.
-Monitor your elderly parents finances. They are most often victim to these types of crimes. Talk to them about scams. There are plenty of resources on the internet that help explain the most common types of scams and how to speak with your elderly parents about them.
-Email/phishing scams. Don’t click on any links from an unverified sender. Hoover over the sender email to see who it is actually from.
-The police will never call you and tell you that you have a warrant. We also do not ask for payment to take care of a warrant.
-I know what you are thinking. There is no way people would fall for these. Trust me they do or they wouldn’t be doing them.
